Exploring Fire Management Strategies at the Wildland-Urban Interface with an Agent-Based Model Framework. Environmental Management

In this study, the authors developed an agent-based modelling framework that explores the potential outcomes of fire management strategies in wildland-urban interfaces that need to navigate competing needs of residents and fire-dependent biodiversity conservation. In the model, they included feedback between urban growth, fuel load, and wildland health. This allowed investigation into tradeoffs between management strategies, and highlighted areas for future opportunities.

The price of paradise: how communities tolerate chronic coastal flooding in rural North Carolina. Frontiers in Climate

In this article, the authors investigated flooding tolerance in a rural region of North Carolina that experiences chronic coastal flooding through community interviews. They found that despite wide-ranging impacts to property, roads, infrastructure, children, and others, that the community tolerated the flooding as a tradeoff for getting to stay there. They suggest that resilience planning in rural coastal areas can help to address uncertainty about government action and supplement existing flooding tolerance strategies.

Reorganization without disruption: How fire-driven spatiotemporal changes in floral resource landscapes influence plant–bee interaction networks. Journal of Applied Ecology

In this article, the authors assessed how fire influenced floral diversity and the distribution of floral resources in the tropics. They found that fire increased the differences in species composition between sites, but plant-bee interactions maintained similar network interactions and robustness before and after the fire. Fire increased the availability of floral resources by stimulating flowering in new patches and extending blooming periods. These findings suggest that prescribed burns could be beneficial in these ecosystems.
