Global Change Fellow Alumnus | Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources | North Carolina State University

2014 – 2015 Global Change Fellow

Where are they now?

Nitin Singh is a Research Associate in the Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Canada). Currently, he is working with Dr. Nandita Basu on a global hydrology project and a nutrient modeling work in the Great Lakes basin.

Statement of purpose:

I am a fourth year Ph.D. student with Dr. Ryan Emanuel in the Dept. of Forestry and Environmental Resources. I am interested in understanding the effects of climate variability on water and carbon cycling in the headwaters of the Southern Appalachians. After graduation, I plan to continue conducting impactful academic research for the betterment of science and society.

Description of research:

My dissertation focuses on understanding the role of climate on hydrological and biogeochemical processes in forested headwater streams of the Southern Appalachians. My suite of dissertation chapters explores streamflow generation processes and how these processes are modulated by landscape heterogeneity and inter-annual climate variability. One of my chapters also investigates the relationship between long-term climate variations and multi decadal patterns of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) export from forested headwater streams in the Southern Appalachians.
My efforts to understand climate impacts on water in terrestrial ecosystems are relevant to SECSC Science Theme 3: Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources, Tasks 1: Hydrological modeling for flow-ecology science in the Southeastern U.S.
