The NCSU Department of Applied Ecology has announced the third, and last, installment of the Fall 2020 Biology, Ecology, and Evolution Seminar Series (BEESS). We have the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Karen Bailey from the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Bailey’s seminar is titled: Climate change, social capital, and sustainable livelihoods in conservation landscapes.”

DESCRIPTION OF TALK:

  Dr. Bailey will discuss her ongoing work to understand human-environment interactions for the intersecting goals of wellbeing of vulnerable populations, equity, and conservation. She will share findings from research across Sub-Saharan Africa with smallholder farming communities living in conservation landscapes. She will focus on case studies from Southern and East Africa to highlight the importance of social capital and local organizations to support sustainable rural livelihoods under changing climatic conditions. She will also briefly describe her work supporting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM.
