FFACCTs WEBINAR: Reforestation Matters in the Forest Service

Presentation: Reforestation Matters in the Forest Service

Planting trees is recognized as an effective natural way to help mitigate changes in climate. The Forest Service has grown seedlings for reforestation since before it was officially the Forest Service, but reforestation efforts are now challenged by national and global initiatives (e.g., Trillion Trees), changes in climate, and an ever-increasing number of acres in need of reforestation. In his presentation, Kas will discuss the importance of reforestation and key issues to consider in its implementation, including shifting disturbance regimes, invasive species, assisted migration, climate change, carbon sequestration, and bioengineering.

About Kas Dumroese: Kas Dumroese is a senior scientist, research plant physiologist at the Rocky Mountain Research Station. His 35 years of research has focused on the propagation and deployment of native plants for ecosystem restoration, resulting in nearly 300 journal and science delivery papers. He also serves as the agency’s national nursery specialist as part of the National Center for Reforestation, Nurseries, and Genetic Resources, and directs the Western Center for Native Plant Conservation and Restoration Science. Currently, Kas co-leads the National Forest System’s Reforestation Ramp-Up Team. He earned his BSc from Michigan Technological University and MSc and PhD from the University of Idaho.
