SUMMARY:Third Thursday Web Forum: Southeastern Plants Regional Species of Greatest Conservation Need
DESCRIPTION:**Note: this web forum is co-hosted with the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center. It requires advance registration and will be hosted via Zoom rather than the usual Teams connection.** \n"Southeastern Plants Regional Species of Greatest Conservation Need" with Carrie Radcliffe\, Emily Coffey\, and Sarah Norris of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. \nThe Southeastern Regional Species of Greatest Conservation Need (RSGCN) list is the first of its kind in the U.S. The Atlanta Botanical Garden (ABG) coordinated the creation of this list\, on behalf of the Southeastern Plant Conservation Alliance (SE PCA)\, by working with experts across the region. Project partners include the NatureServe Network\, Terwilliger Consulting\, Inc.\, Flora of the Southeastern United States\, and the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) Wildlife Diversity Committee. The Southeastern Plants RSGCN list presents species of conservation concern with regional responsibility and opportunity for collaboration\, identifies high level threats and needs\, and sets actionable priorities for rare plants across political boundaries.  \nThis project is moving the dial forward for plant conservation at the regional and national levels by highlighting the critical role of plants in the face of our changing climate and integrating these activities with broader efforts to conserve wildlife. Identification of ecological systems will inform potential Conservation Opportunity Areas that can be addressed by State & Tribal Wildlife plans and Grants\, as well as future iterations of the Southeastern animal RSGCN. These tools will promote more holistic conservation and set the stage for more inclusive and comprehensive and effective landscape \nRegister for the Zoom meeting: https://ncsu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_l5GSPOGyQFKHK7LWf2O8OQ#/registration \n \nArchived slides and web recording \nLink to slides \nWeb recording

SUMMARY:Phenology of Fire: Listening to the Plants and Animals
DESCRIPTION:Fueling Collaboration Panel Discussion Series \nSeason of fire. Opening the burn window. Both of these focus on one of the elements that make up a fire regime – frequency\, intensity/severity\, extent/scale\, and seasonality. Decades of spring-and/or autumn-centric fire can cause a site or landscape to respond very differently than when burned repeatedly across all flammable seasons. Summer burns can produce differing fire effects including increased species richness averages\, biomass\, and stem counts (especially forbs)\, and breaking up the plant species dominance resulting from dormant season burn windows. Our panelists will bring fresh voices to how we can learn from listening to our fire-dependent plants and animals and let the fire effects lead us toward desired outcomes. \nRegister here. \nFueling Collaboration strives to build connections between land managers and researchers through a series of interactive virtual panel discussions. \nWildland fire management is complex and ever-changing. As the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in 2020\, our planning team members recognized a need to continue to connect people throughout the region and across disciplines\, organizations\, and specializations. Fueling Collaboration is a forum designed to support those networks and to bring people together to discuss\, explore\, and address the latest fire science and fire management issues across the eastern United States. \nStrong networks involving land managers\, researchers\, and fire professionals can increase the application of the best available science on the ground while ensuring critical science needs are recognized and addressed. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to meet these needs by hosting nuanced conversations on the cutting edge of fire management and science. \nThis series was developed by: the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station\, the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station and the Joint Fire Science Program’s Consortium of Appalachian Fire Managers and Scientists\, Lake States Fire Science Consortium\, North Atlantic Fire Science Exchange\, Oak Woodlands & Forests Fire Consortium\, Southern Fire Exchange\, and Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna Fire Science Consortium.

DESCRIPTION:When Hurricane Maria devastated San Juan\, Puerto Rico\, in 2017\, Carmen Yulín Cruz was on the front lines as the island’s 3.2 million residents responded to the devastation which rippled beyond physical destruction to financial\, political and humanitarian suffering. \nCruz\, who was mayor of San Juan for eight years\, now works with universities and nongovernmental organizations to advocate for crisis response on a community level. On Jan. 18\, she will speak at North Carolina State University for the 2024 Eloise S. Cofer Family Living Lecture Series. Anchored around themes of community engagement and leadership\, her lecture will emphasize how local actions lead to global impacts.  \nThe event\, which is free and open to the public\, will be held at 7 p.m. in the James B. Hunt Jr. Library Auditorium.Register here.
