My laboratory studies sex determination and reproductive biology in fishes primarily, behavioral physiology and neurobiology, and has more recently begun participating in a program aimed at exploring the potential utility of genetic approaches to removing invasive rodents from islands where they represent a biodiversity threat. Of most direct relevance to CASC, we are interested in temperature and other environmental effects on sex determination in southern flounder. This species is ecologically and economically important, exhibits TSD with varying sex ratio outcomes along a north-south gradient in North Carolina, and populations have shown range-wide declines in recent decades where climate change may be an important contributing factor.
