Area(s) of Expertise
Changes in the physical, chemical and biological environment around aquatic microbes potentially alters their activity and their impact on ecosystems and co-occurring organisms. Experiments with natural and model microbes - bacteria and microalgae - enable predictions to be made about microbial-mediated change to ecosystems and biogeochemistry (esp. nutrient cycling) in the future. The Paerl Lab @ NCSU is interested in leveraging such experiments to help anticipate future ecosystem health, nutrient cycling and 'services' offered by microbes - e.g. degradation of pollutants. Collaborative work with scientists outside of microbiology is of particular interest in order to gain new or unique views of ecosystem change.
