Top News: US Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell Announces New Wildlife and Climate Studies at the SE Climate Science Center. These studies will be in association with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan. This program will fun two studies at the SE Climate Science Center, these studies will focus on how climate change will affect natural resources and management actions that can be taken to help offset such change. New Publication: Evolutionary tipping points in the capacity to adapt to environmental change This article, co-authored by Carlos Botero a SE CSC post-doc last year, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. Not only that, but it was chosen to be featured on the journal’s cover!Read more.
New Publication: Modeling climate change, urbanization, and fire effects on Pinus palustris ecosystems in the southeastern U.S. This article as a part of Jennifer Costanza and Adam Terando’s project has recently been published in the Journal of Environmental Management. Read more.
Current SE CSC Fellow Presented at AUG 2014: One of the SE CSC’s fellows for this year, Nitin Singh, was able to present two posters at the 2014 annual Fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, the largest Earth and space science meeting in the world. Read more.

Recommendations from the Resilience and Preparedness Task Force: A year ago President Obama has created a Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience whose goals is to bring first had experience to building this climate readiness and resilience in their communities. Now that the task force has been in effect for a year they have issued their report, found here.
New NOAA Fisheries tool to visualize climate and other impacts on marine animals: In collaboration with thePinsky Lab of Rutgers University, NOAA has developed a web-based tool called OceanAdapt, to aggregate marine biological survey date from all over North America. Read More.

OceanAdapt Tool Tracks Shifts in US Marine Species Distribution: The OceanAdapt Web Tool can help managers, scientists, fishermen, fishing communities, and the public track changes in the distribution of marine species with changing climate and ocean conditions. Access the tool.
Climate Explorer: Visualizing Climate Data in Maps & Graphs: The Climate Explorer is a research application built to support the US Climate Resilience Toolkit. The tool offers interactive visualizations for exploring maps and data related to the toolkit’s Taking Action case studies. Learn more.
New Climate Economy Global Action Plan: The Global Commission, advised by some of the world’s leading economists, set out a ten point Global Action Plan for governments and businesses to secure better growth in a low-carbon economy. Read more.

Coastal GeoTools 2015, Charleston, South Carolina: The Coastal GeoTools conference, established in 1999, is typically held every two years and focuses on geospatial data, tools, technology, and information for coastal resource management professionals. GCPO LCC Steering Cmte Meetings: Webex meeting of the GCPO LCC Steering Cmte. They will discuss FY15 project priorities, get an update on a Conservation Planning Atlas Outreach Strategy, and meet the new Science Coordinator. January 27, 2015, 1:30-3:30 pm

Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy: Dennis Figg, who has represented the Missouri Dept of Conservation on the GCPO LCC Steering Cmte for the last few years, has now been asked to take on the role of SECAS Coordinator, and has agreed to this new and very important job!
GCPO LCC Congratulates Dr. Todd Jones-Farrand as the New Science Coordinator: Todd has been the Science Coordinator for the Central Hardwoods Joint Venture since 2009, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in landscape ecology, geospatial modeling, and working in a partnership-driven, landscape-scale enterprise such as the Central Hardwoods Joint Venture.

California Cap-and-Trade System Includes Oil and Gas Sector: California’s cap-and-trade program now requires gasoline and diesel producers to supply lower-carbon fuels or to buy allowances for the greenhouse gases emitted when those fuels are burned. Read more.

NOAA Journal Article Establishes ‘Tipping Points’ for Sea Level Rise Related Flooding: Published in the American Geophysical Union’s Journal Earth’s Future finds that, by 2050, a majority of US coastal areas are likely to experience 30 or more days of flooding per year due to sea level rise. Draft NC Sea Level Rise Report Released for Peer Review: The NC Coastal Resource Commission science advisory panel submitted an updated version of it’s sea level rise report for external peer review. It will be released for public review in March. Read more.
Lifting America’s Game in Climate Education, Literacy, and Training: The White House Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP) is launching a new Climate Education and Literacy Initiative to help connect American students and citizens with the best available science-based information about climate change. Worldwide Retreat of Glaciers Confirmed in Unprecedented Detail: A new book from the International GLIMS (Global Land Ice Measurements from Space) initiative, an international collaboration including the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, provides the most comprehensive report to date on global glacier changes. NOAA Restore Act Science Program releases its First Federal Funding Opportunity: This program is seeking proposals that will produce timely and high-quality scientific results that may be used to develop management strategies to support the sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, including it’s fisheries.
