Survey Invitation – Untangling, Understanding Vine Proliferation in the SE CASC Region, A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective
You are invited to participate in a survey that aims to understand the perspectives and experiences of diverse stakeholders on the proliferation of climbing plants throughout the southeastern United States, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

This region is known for its diversity of ecosystems and climbing plants, a characteristic most likely mirrored by diverse relationships and experiences that people have with climbing plants, including impacts. This may partially explain the fragmented nature of invasive vine research, management, and storytelling (geography, stakeholders, species). Yet, throughout this region climbing plants may be driving large-scale shifts across natural and human-dominated landscapes suggesting similar causes, consequences, and challenges.
This survey will help in the development of an overall assessment of the current and future impacts of proliferating climbing plants. For this purpose, we designed a survey that will allow us to learn about the perspectives that different stakeholders have on the ongoing impacts of these plants.
We use two terms that may require some clarification. Climbing plants – We use this broad term to include herbaceous (vines) and woody (liana) climbing plants. Proliferating species – We use this term to refer to non-native and native climbers that smother pastures, shrublands, forests, and human-made infrastructure. These species may or may not be officially listed as invasive or noxious weeds by federal, state, and territorial agencies.
This study is part of an Ideas Project (Predicting Invasive Vine Spread in the Southeast Using Remote Sensing and Species Distribution Models) funded by the USGS and SE CASC and has the approval of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus Institutional Review Board (CIPSHI 2509002959).
Who can participate? You must be age 21 or older to contribute to this study through the completion of a survey. You need to have a Google account to access the consent form and survey. It is possible that when you access the consent form you will find a statement that reads “The name, email, and photo associated with your Google account will be recorded when you upload files and submit this form.” This is a Google security measure. The consent form will provide you with important information that will help you decide if you want to continue with the survey.

Invitación – Desenredando, Entendiendo la Proliferación de Enredaderas en la Región del SE CASC – Una Perspectiva de Múltiples Usuarios
Ud. está siendo invitado a participar en una encuesta que busca entender las perspectivas y experiencias de diferentes partes interesadas acerca de la proliferación de plantas trepadoras a través del sureste de los Estados Unidos, incluyendo Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos en el Caribe.

Esta región se conoce por su diversidad de ecosistemas y plantas trepadoras, una característica que seguramente se refleja en la diversidad de relaciones personas-plantas trepadoras, experiencias, e impactos. Esto podría explicar de manera parcial la naturaleza fragmentada de la investigación que existe sobre la proliferación de plantas trepadoras, manejo, y narrativas (geografía, usuarios, especies). Sin embargo, a través de esta región las plantas trepadoras posiblemente están impulsando cambios a gran escala en paisajes naturales y antropizados lo cual sugiere causas, consecuencias y retos similares.
Esta encuesta busca evaluar de manera comprensiva los impactos presentes y futuros de la proliferación de plantas trepadoras pudiera tener. Para ello se ha diseñado una encuesta que permitirá conocer las perspectivas de las personas e instituciones que están siendo impactadas por estas plantas.
Usamos dos términos que requieren algún grado de clarificación. Plantas trepadoras – Usamos este término amplio para incluir plantas trepadoras herbáceas (enredaderas) y leñosas (lianas). Especies prolíficas – Usamos este término para referirnos a plantas trepadoras no nativas y especies nativas que sofocan pastizales, arbustales, bosques, e infraestructura diversa. Estas especies pueden o no estar listadas oficialmente como invasoras o malezas por agencias federales, estatales y territoriales.
Este estudio es parte de un Proyecto Ideas (Predicting Invasive Vine Spread inthe Southeast Using Remote Sensing and Species Distribution Models) financiado por el USGS y SE CASC y tiene la aprobación del Comité Institucional de Protección de Sujetos Humanos de la Universidad de Puerto Rico recinto de Río Piedras (CIPSHI 2509002959).
Quienes pueden participar? Ud. debe tener 21 años o más para contribuir a este estudio a través de una encuesta. Deberá tener una cuenta en Google para acceder a la hoja de consentimiento y al cuestionario. Es posible que cuando acceda la hoja de consentimiento encuentre el anuncio “El nombre, email y foto asociada con su cuenta de Google serán registradas cuando Ud. añada archivos y someta la forma.” Esto es una medida de seguridad de Google. La hoja de consentimiento le proveerá información importante, que le permitirá decidir si quiere continuar con la encuesta.
