Collaborations to Save Threatened Tree Species

Urban trees worldwide have low species and genetic diversity, posing high risks of tree loss as stresses increase from climate change and pests and diseases. Recent cross-sector work has resulted in a new approach to identify and conserve at-risk tree genera, species, and populations. This includes on-the-ground conservation and species recovery projects, and a data collection partnership program that leverages Forest Service seed orchards and other public and private efforts to create genetically diverse collections of threatened oak tree species, and others. Stemming from a seven-year collaborative effort with the Forest Service Forest Health Protection Program, a team of experts from The Morton Arboretum and Botanic Garden Conservation International will share results and engage our community of practice in next steps to conserving tree genetic diversity.
