Native Nations & Climate Change Webinar Words Matter: Considering Language Barriers

May 26, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Various government agencies, organizations, and community groups are engaging in climate adaptation planning. Native communities, Tribal Governments, and Tribal citizens are also embarking on adaptation planning. On the surface, it may appear these processes are parallel or complementary. But language remains a significant barrier between Native and non-native collaboration. Often, differences in language hinders adaptation efforts involving Tribal Governments and federal agencies.

This webinar will highlight common pitfalls in discussing climate change with Native communities. Presenters will provide tools to support successful collaboration with Native Nations. Using best practices and thoughtful language can support collective work to plan for a turbulent future.

Presenters for this session will be:

David Goldstein, Tribal and Cultural Affairs Specialist, Northeast Region, National Park Service
Selin Oh, University of Chicago
James Rattling, Research Associate, Cooperative Institute Research Environmental Sciences, University of Colorado-Boulder

*This webinar is being hosted by the National Park Service as part of the larger Native Nations & Climate Change Webinar Series
