Phenology, the timing of life cycle events of plants and animals, is a key tool in the natural resource manager’s toolbox. Phenology can uncover mismatches in mutualistic relationships, identify impacts of land use change, improve management of invasive species, and shed light on which species are vulnerable or resilient to climate change impacts.

The USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) is a national-scale science and monitoring initiative focused on the timing of seasonal life cycle events to support natural resource decision making and the advancement of science. The USA-NPN currently offers several data products and resources with direct relevance to management, including historical and short-term forecast maps of the start of the spring season and short-term forecasts of activity of insect pests and invasive plants.
