SE CSC Launches Science Video Endeavor
In October, the SE CSC sponsored a Science Video-Making Workshop designed to provide training in the production of videos about science topics. The workshop was led by emeritus USGS scientist Karen McKee and included a mixture of instruction, discussion, and hands-on production of science videos by individuals and teams. More information about the workshop and about communicating with science videos can be found on Dr. McKee’s website, The Scientist Videographer. 16 graduate students and staff from several NCSU departments participated in the workshop, held in the Hunt Library.
As a follow-up to the Science Video-Making Workshop, SE CSC recently held a Science Film Festival to showcase some of the skills that were learned or honed by workshop participants while creating their videos. A panel of judges, which included NCSU scientists active in the field of science communication and professional cinematographers, evaluated the student films, provided helpful comments, and selected an overall winner as part of the juried competition. During the event, the group also watched and discussed other interesting science videos recommended by the judges.
Our panel of esteemed judges included:
Holly Menninger, Roland Kays, Jennifer Bird, and Luke McMahon.
