SE CSC Welcomes Dr. Harry Daniels as University Director
Effective August 1, 2017, Harry Daniels becomes the NC State University Director of the Southeast Climate Science Center. The Center fosters collaborative partnerships across the NC State campus on topics of global change.
A professor of applied ecology and aquaculture specialist with NC State Extension, Daniels recently served as head of the Department of Applied Ecology. In addition, he also has a long history with the SE CSC as a Faculty Affiliate and a Faculty Advisory Committee member. He will replace former William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Nick Haddad as director.
“We have close to 70 faculty affiliates from six different colleges at NC State, and are looking to extend our reach even further,” Daniels said.
With a Ph.D. in water quality from Auburn University, Daniels’ research interests include the aquaculture of freshwater and marine fish and shrimp, with recent projects focusing on the southern flounder and hybrid striped bass. He is also director of the Master of Environmental Assessment Program.
“I have been working collaboratively with other researchers to investigate the effects of warming coastal waters on temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) in southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma). Increasing water temperature causes populations of these flounder to shift toward a higher percentage of male fish. Since the female flounder grow approximately three times faster than the males and attain a much larger size, the females constitute a very high proportion of the commercial and recreational fishing harvest, which may not be sustainable for the long term viability of the fishery. Our research has focused on defining the developmental window when sex determination occurs and evaluating the sex ratios of wild populations in different nursery habitats.” Daniels said.
