Shaping Coastal Nature-based Solutions: Perceptions and Policy Priorities of Living Shorelines. Nature-Based Solutions
Living shorelines are a nature-based solution for shoreline stabilization in the face of sea-level rise. They are a state research priority to support coastal risk reduction and resilience goals in Florida. The authors examine the social and institutional factors surrounding the support and barriers around the design and implementation of living shorelines as perceived by practitioners and marine contractors. They then connected these barriers and enablers to policy priority patterns to provide a methodology and contextual baseline for the planning and implementation of living shorelines.
Refuge identification as a climate adaptation strategy to promote fish persistence during drought. Fish and Fisheries
Drought refuges are areas that promote resistance and resilience to drought, but research is still needed on how to identify functional refuges to support fish assemblages. To fill this gap, the authors synthesize literature on drought refuges and propose a framework to identify and manage functional refuges that incorporates characteristics specific to the species. Through case studies they show the challenges to drought refuge management in the context of increasingly long and frequent droughts.
Satellite telemetry reveals high-use internesting areas and international foraging extent for loggerhead turtles tagged in southeast Florida, USA. Endangered Species Research
In this article, the authors use satellite tracking and behavioral switching state-space movement modeling to examine the internesting use-areas, migration patterns, and foraging area distribution of a previously uninvestigated nesting loggerhead population in southeast Florida. They found that most of the identified internesting area was not designated under the US Endangered Species Act as critical loggerhead ‘nearshore reproductive habitat’. They also found that most have foraging home ranges outside of the USA. This has important implications for expanding federally designated critical habitat, and developing international collaborative conservation strategies.
Forester interest in, and limitations to, adapting to climate change across the rural-to-urban gradient. Climate Risk Management
The authors conducted two surveys targeting both rural and urban foresters to identify key learning opportunities that support climate-adaptive forest management. They found that many foresters are seeking to maintain current forest conditions or restore forest conditions following a disruption or change. They also found a difference in confidence between urban and rural foresters when it comes to addressing climate change through specific adaptation strategies. They propose facilitated learning opportunities for rural and urban foresters to be able to learn from each other and their methods within their given contexts.
