A new article in the Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics co-authored by Rebecca Irwin and 2019-20 Global Change Research Fellow Mario Simon Pinilla-Gallego examines the mechanisms and consequences of plant–pollinator–pathogen interactions.
Gwen Kirschke and Jamie Huerta, 2024-25 Global Change Research Fellows, co-authored a highlight on citizen science data in widely used invasive species data sources for SE RISCC.
2024-25 Global Change Research Fellow, Christopher Oates, is the lead author on a paper in Nature Water detailing how surface waters in socially vulnerable areas are disproportionately under-monitored for nutrients in the US South Atlantic-Gulf region.
Julianne Reas, 2022-23 Global Change Research Fellow, co-authored a Journal of Environmental Management article on adapting visitor use management under a changing climate across the U.S. National Park System.
2020-21 Global Change Research Fellow, Megan Johnson, explains how climate change may make prescribed fires rarer – but increase their air quality impacts.
2018-19 Global Change Research Fellow, Chandramauli Awasthi, is the lead author on an article on hydroclimatic scenario generation using two-stage stochastic simulation framework in Advances in Water Resources.
Hamdi Zurqani details his work on using AI to measure forest biomass.
In a working paper, Katie Warnell maps the ecological toll of hurricane Helene and recovery efforts in western North Carolina.
Paul Armsworth co-authored an article on multilevel decision‐making and protected area prioritization in Natural Resource Modeling.

Does knowledge co-production influence adaptive capacity?: A framework for evaluation. Environmental Science and Policy.
The authors developed a framework called the Wheel, to evaluate if knowledge co-production builds adaptive capacity. They determined measurable dimensions of adaptive capacity and used knowledge co-production literatures to more effectively encompass processes, outcomes, and associations. Their Wheel framework can be tailored for evaluation in various contexts.
The Influence of Drought on Heat Wave Intensity, Duration, and Exposure. Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology.
The authors looked at how droughts influenced heat wave duration, intensity, and heat exposure to better understand how droughts impact the societal risks of heat waves. They found that heat waves compounded by drought had higher levels of heat exposure, primarily because droughts lengthened the duration of heat waves by up to 2 days. They argue the importance of accounting for the role of soil moisture in evaluating heat wave intensity and exposure.
Projected Increases in Climate Extremes Across Global Vertebrate Diversity Hotspots. Global Change Biology.
The authors used climate models under four shared socioeconomic pathways to examine how projected changes in extreme drought, heat, and precipitation frequencies would affect vertebrates in 33 diversity hotspots. They found that tropical regions were faced with the largest relative increases in extreme heat and drought. They also argue that vertebrate vulnerability within numerous hotspots is understudied.
