Global Change Seminar: Participatory Science in Climate Adaptation Decision-Making

Tuesday, April 7 at 3pm ET
via Zoom

Join us for a webinar hosted by a group of the 2025-26 Global Change Research Fellows featuring Dr. Xiao Xiao (Arizona State University), Dr. Jelena Vukomanovic (North Carolina State University), and Hilary Morris (Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy)

Abstract:

Climate-adaptation decision-making can be difficult when necessary information is not available. Participatory science has emerged as a way for community members to collect data and fill knowledge gaps regarding climate adaptation. However, participatory science approaches are not just a way to collect data; they also build decision literacy so communities and practitioners can explicitly weigh objectives, negotiate priorities under uncertainty, and make trade-offs in adaptation planning more transparent and defensible. Participatory science also offers a platform for community members to express their interests, expectations, and experiences. In this seminar, speakers will share their experiences with participatory science in decision-making and planning support.

Speakers:

Xiao Xiao

Dr. Xiao is an Associate Professor at Hainan University – Arizona State University International College in the School of Community Resources & Development. Her research in recreation, parks, tourism, and natural resources focuses on parks and recreation planning, tourism geography, and community engagement. Her expertise spans diversity and social justice issues related to parks, transportation management in parks, quantitative methodology in tourism management, decision-making sciences in tourism management, social aspects of climate change and adaptation, and applications of geospatial analytics in tourism management.

Jelena Vukomanovic

Dr. Jelena Vukomanovic is a geospatial land change scientist who studies how global environmental change – from increased wildfire and flood risk – influence human behavior and in turn, how human choices and preferences shape and impact the environment. Her research group is innovating geospatial mapping and participatory modeling methods that re-imagine how we engage stakeholders in co-production of knowledge and adaptation strategies in real-world communities. Dr. Vukomanovic is an Associate Professor in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management in the College of Natural Resources and Faculty Fellow in the Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State.

Hilary Morris

Hilary is a User Support Specialist for the Southeast Conservation Blueprint. She also serves as the communications lead for the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS) partnership. Hilary has ten years of experience working in landscape-scale conservation and science communication in the Southeast. She is passionate about connecting lands and waters to support thriving ecosystems, fish and wildlife populations, and communities. She believes in the power of strong partnerships, innovative science, and user-friendly tools to bring together the conservation community to achieve shared goals.
