Where are they now?
Gabby has held a Post Doc position at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities since June 2018.
Statement of Purpose:
I am a PhD student working with Dr. Rebecca Irwin in the Department of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University. My research focuses of the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator interactions. I conduct my research in montane ecosystems of the Rocky Mountains. Long-term research on plants and pollinators in montane regions has shown that climate change is directly responsible for altering the organisms’ activity periods, but no studies have examined the consequences for individual species and their interactions. In order to fully understand how climate change can disrupt plant-pollinator interactions, we must first measure the consequences of altered activity periods on plant growth and reproduction, and bee emergence and survival rates.
Description of Research:
For my research, I use a series of field experiments in which I manipulate snowmelt timing and frost exposure to examine how plants, pollinators, and their interactions respond to climate change. With my project, I hope to identify potential threats to pollinators and pollinator-dependent plants in the face of climate change, and determine how to mitigate these threats in order to conserve plant-pollinator interactions. My research falls under Science Theme 4: Ecological Research and Modeling.
