About this Event

Join us online for a conversation with Belinda Archibong, Malo Hutson, and Wolfram Schlenker moderated by Alex Halliday.

The Speakers:

Belinda Archibong is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her research areas focus on the role of historical institutions and environment in inequality of access to public services and the development of human capital, especially in African nations. Some current research studies the effects of epidemics on gender gaps in human capital investment, the economics of epidemics, and the impacts of air pollution from gas flaring on human capital outcomes; with a focus on the ways in which institutions mitigate or exacerbate the impacts of climate change and environment on inequalities around gender and marginalized groups. She is a faculty affiliate at Columbia University’s Center for Development Economics and Policy, The Earth Institute at Columbia University, the Institute of African Studies, the Institute for Research in African-American Studies, the Columbia Population Research Center, and the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy.

Malo Hutson is an Associate Professor in Urban Planning at Columbia GSAPP and Director of the school’s Urban Community and Health Equity Lab. Hutson is a widely-recognized scholar, teacher, and practitioner whose research at the intersection of urban planning and health inequities is of relevance in the planning of today’s cities across the United States, and around the world. Professor Hutson’s specific focus is on community development and urban equity, racial and ethnic inequalities and urban policy, as well as the built environment and health. Alongside his academic work, Dr. Hutson is co-founder of The NIAM Group, which develops policy recommendations for local government and leads community engagement for local development projects.

Wolfram Schlenker is a Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs. He co-directs the Center on Environmental Economics and Policy (CEEP) with Professor Douglas Almond and co-directs the Energy & Environment Concentration at SIPA with David Sandalow. He is an environmental economist and studies the effect of weather and climate on agricultural production, how climate trends and the US biofuel mandate influences agricultural commodity prices, and how pollution impacts both agricultural yields and human morbidity. Recently, he examined how financial markets incorporate climate forecasts and the incidence of a carbon tax.
