Coastal Landscapes in Transition: Impacts of Sea Level Rise on Blue Carbon Ecosystems
November 9, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
The value of coastal wetlands as carbon sinks makes them an important focus area for managers looking to enhance resilience, advance climate mitigation goals, and secure the myriad of ecosystem services they provide to humans and wildlife. Landscape-level impacts from climate change, such as sea level rise, erosion, and flooding, are projected to significantly alter coastal areas and resources over the coming century. Scientists expect that blue carbon ecosystems like salt marshes, tidal forests, and seagrass beds, which are recognized for their ability to sequester and store carbon, will be particularly susceptible to these changes. As landscapes change, rapid shifts have the potential to impact the extent and functionality of coastal habitats and their capacity to capture carbon.
To explore the impacts of sea level rise on blue carbon ecosystems in the mid-Atlantic, Louisiana and California, and discuss adaptive management strategies, please join the Pew Charitable Trusts on November 9 for a webinar featuring experts from Virginia Institute of Marine Science, U.S Geological Survey, and Elkhorn Slough Estuarine Research Reserve.
