Students, stakeholders, industry experts, and academics will begin creating solutions for the blue economy in an ideation event and workshop
We are pleased to announce a workshop on Creating Solutions for the Global Blue Economy, to be held March 25-26, 2022!
North Carolina is ideally positioned to create a US mid-Atlantic sustainable blue economy, or bluetech innovation cluster, by tapping North Carolina’s diverse and broad ocean-connected resources. As the global population grows, humanity will continue to demand more from the ocean. However, the risks posed by sea-level rise have heightened awareness and concern about the long term sustainability of our oceans and our coastal communities that power the blue economy.
We seek to bring together graduate and undergraduate students, stakeholders, industry experts, and academics to Carteret Community College and the Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST) in Morehead City, North Carolina to begin working on solutions to these challenges.
Confirmed speakers:
- Jane Harrison, NC Sea Grant
- Mark Powell, Albemarle Resource Conservation & Development Council
- Danya Perry, Wake County Economic Development & Raleigh Chamber of Commerce
- Emil Runge, First Flight Venture Center
- Roy He, NC State University & Fathom Science
- David Cerino, Carteret Community College
- Whitney Knollenberg, NC State University
- Mark Huang, Sea-Ahead
- Milly Pitts, Ocean Exchange
Plenary talks and breakout groups will be used to inspire and engage participants during a 2-day workshop that will begin Friday, March 25, and conclude late Saturday afternoon, March 26, 2022. With generous financial support from a variety of sponsors, we will be able to defray travel expenses for students and workshop presenters.
- Students: Transportation to and from Morehead City, Lodging, and Meals will be provided!
- A block of hotel rooms will be for participants. Details forthcoming.
Space is limited, so register soon! This two-day workshop will inaugurate a series of events culminating in a competition for innovative solutions that address the problems identified in the workshop. Long term plans call for expanding these events and competitions broadly in NC as part of a growing bluetech cluster located at the NC coast. Registration ends Feb. 1st, 2022.
