Expanding Our Ideas of Climate Refugia to Inform Climate Resilience Conservation

As the climate continues to change, vulnerable wildlife species will need specific management strategies to help them adapt to these changes. One such strategy focuses on the concept of refugia, areas that are buffered from the impacts of climate change and therefore remain suitable habitats for vulnerable species over time. Although the use of climate change refugia is a common and widely accepted strategy to promote wildlife conservation, there are many opportunities to expand on our ideas of refugia. Covering work by the Designing Sustainable Landscapes Project and the National Audubon Society, this presentation will discuss recent research that examines the benefits of understanding the mechanisms by which climate change alters wildlife populations when thinking about climate refugia. It will also explore novel methods to estimate climate refugia via the incorporation of social elements, landscape connectivity, and urban growth. This work is intended to help land managers apply landscape conservation designs and make difficult decisions in the face of the climate crisis.
