NE CASC Seminar – Ripple Effects of Dissolved Oxygen Depletion in Temperate Lakes under Climate Change
December 13, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Overview
A fundamental component of lake ecosystems, dissolved oxygen is a critical characteristic of habitat in the aquatic environment and strongly influences the chemical constituents present in the water column. In this webinar, NE CASC Postdoctoral Fellow Stephen Jane will discuss how warming is influencing the concentrations of dissolved oxygen in lakes along with some implications of this warming. In particular, Jane will consider the effect of warmin–in conjunction with another global change driver called ‘browning’–on habitat availability for cold-water organisms like brook trout. Browning expands cold-water volumes, but also depletes oxygen, making it important to understand whether it ultimately mitigates or exacerbates the effects of warming for cold-loving organisms. Further, Jane will allso examine how warming, through its effects on dissolved oxygen, influences the concentrations of metals present in the tissues of fishes sought by anglers, and what this means for fish consumption and human health.
