Understanding and Using New Tools for Conservation Planning for Climate Adaptation and Mitigation

Description: Climate-driven shifts in species and ecosystems are complicating efforts to conserve biodiversity at the landscape scale. Recognizing this challenge, agencies and non-governmental organizations are increasingly searching for tools and information that allow identification of climate refugia, corridors, and ecosystems which store irrecoverable carbon, areas that are key to enhancing the resilience of natural systems under climate change. AdaptWest is a spatial database for conservation planning that helps fill that information need by providing seamless high-resolution data on a variety of climate-related metrics and detailed background context for evaluating the utility of different metrics in the context of your particular planning process. We will discuss recently developed AdaptWest tools, including the Climate Resilience Data Explorer, an open-source web application that allows users to view, summarize, and generate reports regarding 10 key metrics related to climate resilience, as well as above- and below- ground ecosystem carbon. The web app consists of both “explorers”, which allow viewing of data and generation of reports summarizing metrics for North America's watersheds and management areas, and “tours”, which provide tutorials on how the metrics are generated and how they can be interpreted. A 30 minute presentation will be followed by 15 minutes of informal questions and discussion.
