Statement of purpose:
My journey into Environmental Science during my undergraduate studies was accidental but transformative. Initially exploring non-traditional career paths, I discovered my true passion for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and public engagement during my junior year. A project focusing on sedimentation in Rupa Lake, Nepal, ignited my interest in leveraging technology for water-related issues and integrating stakeholder engagement and policy analysis.
My role as a Research Assistant at Kathmandu University’s Aquatic Ecology Centre was pivotal in nurturing my passion for research. Working on the South Asian Nitrogen Hub project for nearly two years, I delved into nitrogen management in Nepal’s agriculture, collaborating with diverse stakeholders and policymakers to craft sustainable solutions for farmers. These experiences honed my skills in policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and data analysis, preparing me for advanced research. Now, I’m eager to pursue a PhD under Dr. Daniel Obenour at NC State to advance climate solutions through technology-integrated research while utilizing communication and connection as vital climate mitigation strategies within natural resource management.
Description of research:
My research focuses on specializing in algal modeling (for cyanobacteria) across U.S. fresh and coastal waters. The concentration of algae in water bodies is pivotal in maintaining water quality. Coastal systems face vulnerability due to various dimensions of climate change, including sea level rise, escalating temperatures, and alterations in freshwater inflow. These factors, coupled with potential shifts in nutrient loading from watershed development, will be investigated in future scenarios. Collaborating with stakeholders, I intend to develop pertinent predictive tools and risk mapping products. The objective is to protect public health by identifying high-risk conditions and informing management decisions related to coastal water quality. Additionally, I will work alongside collaborators to develop public outreach and communication initiatives.
