Communicating Risk in a Changing Climate

Speakers:

• Joseph Trujillo Falcon (NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory/University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology)
• Dr. Kenzie Krocak (University of Oklahoma Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis)
• Max Cawley (Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC)

Overview:

As today’s global climate patterns continue to evolve, effective communication of these risks has become increasingly important. In order to educate the public about these climate change induced hazards, equitable risk communication is vital.

This seminar invites a panel of risk communication experts to share their expertise regarding risk perception and societal impacts of climate hazards. Joseph Trujillo Falcón is a Graduate Research Assistant at the Cooperative Institute for Severe Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at the University of Oklahoma, where he researches crisis communication within Spanish-speaking communities. He is also a bilingual meteorologist for MyRadar, and he serves as Chair of the AMS Committee for Hispanic and Latinx Advancement (CHALA). Dr. Kenzie Krocak is a research scientist at the OU Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis. She creates and distributes public surveys in order to understand how different demographic groups react to and understand severe weather communication, such as National Weather Service warning messages. Max Cawley is the Director of Climate Research and Engagement for the Museum of Life and Science in Durham North Carolina. He is an educator, researcher, evaluator, and science communicator with the Museum and focuses on participatory and responsible science through public engagement.
