Climate Adaptation Planning and Policy for World Heritage
Dr. Erin Seekamp will present her work as a 2019 Research Fellow at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). Specifically, she will present (a) a value-focused, co-production of science approach to develop a climate adaptation planning framework for World Heritage sites and (b) a proposed policy for the UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre that enables trans-formative adaptation of vulnerable World Heritage sites.
Coastal cultural resources are vulnerable to climate change impacts, such as infrastructure damage, exposed archaeological remains, and altered landscapes from increased storm intensity, as well as flooding and erosion associated with sea level rise. However, adapting cultural resources is fraught with challenges and, to date, has limited policy guidance.
