Research withTribes: A SuggestedFramework for theCo-production ofKnowledge with Dr.Caleb Hickman,Supervisory Biologist forthe Eastern Band ofCherokee Indians

About the Speaker: Born and raised inOklahoma, Caleb Hickman is acitizen of the Cherokee Nation, oneof the three federally recognizedtribes of Cherokee descent. Afterleaving Oklahoma, he received hisbachelor’s degree in biology fromMissouri Valley College, masters atMissouri State University and Ph.D.in Zoology at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. He has authored and co-authored many publications at the edge ofecology and social science. Caleb has worked with a variety of species across variousecosystems before finding his dream job as the Supervisory Biologist for the EasternBand of Cherokee Indians. Currently, with a small team, he works to study and conservea variety of game and non-game fish and wildlife species and their habitats within theCherokee homeland. He uses a combination of science-based management coupledwith a socio-ecological perspective with an eye toward preserving traditional knowledgefor the tribe. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and hiking in the mountains, reading Cherokeehistory, and participating in Cherokee cultural events, including, when he is able, thetraditional stickball game. He is married with two wonderful sons.
