Linking People and Nature: the story of the National Ecosystem Services Partnership

Lydia Olander will share her story of why a nationalpartnership on ecosystem services was needed, how itcame about, how it works, and what it has done totake ecosystem services from the realm of academicsand move it into practice for U.S. resource managers.She will present several examples including coastalrestoration, forest planning, spatial planning,environmental mitigation, and natural capitalaccounting and will discuss the remaining challengesand priorities moving forward. 

Bio: Lydia Olander directs the Ecosystem Services Program at the Nicholas Institute forEnvironmental Policy Solutions at Duke University. She is an adjunct professor at the NicholasSchool of the Environment. She leads the National Ecosystem Services Partnership, supportingefforts to integrate ecosystem services into decision making, studies environmental marketsand mitigation, climate mitigation and resilience from natural and working lands, andsustainable infrastructure, and is working to expand engaged interdisciplinary sustainabilityscience in academia. She also serves on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers EnvironmentalAdvisory Board and the secretariat of The Bridge Collaborative.
